This strategy is a blend of Bend the Line and Philosophical Chairs that has been adapted to promote team building and exploration of the deeper reasoning underlying diverse views.

Students are given a provocative statement or claim and must decide to what degree they agree or disagree with it. They can write a percentage on an index card or sticky note to show their level of agreement: Complete agreement = 100%; no agreement = 0%.

Students then form a line from 0% to 100% to see class differences and discuss their reasoning with one or two students near them, who should have a similar view. Then they bend the line (fold in half at the middle) to talk with those at the other end who have opposing views.

Exploring perpectives in this way is an excellent precursor to argument writing or mock trials. Because this activity explores diverse perspectives and requires students to provide supporting evidence for them, it is a DOK Level 3 activity.
